TRIPS TO OTHER AREA RIVERS

  • Des Plaines River day trips
    • $40 / person in a canoe or tandem kayak; $50 / person in a single kayak
    • Northwest Suburban - Riverwoods (Rivershire Park) to Des Plaines (near Euclid). This is a longer trip through the forest preserves starting in Lake County.
      • August 31 - 10:00 launch
  • Little Calumet River day trips This trip is organized as part of Paddle-a-Trail Month, highlighting an interesting but little paddled portion of the Norther Illinois Water Trail.
    • Bald eagles have been observed attempting to nest along the Little Calumet in recent years, the closest to Chicago that a nest has been seen in a century.
    • We'll put in at Gouwens Park in South Holland and paddle to Fays Point in Blue Island
    • The trip is about 6 miles, or 2 hours.
    • $40/ person in a canoe or tandem kayak, $50/ person in a single kayak

      • Saturday, September 20 - 10:00 launch
  • Kankakee River Paddle & Crane Viewing - Each fall, all the Sandhill Cranes of the upper Midwest fly south, stopping over at a single preserve in Northwest Indiana for a month of socializing and courtship. We’ll head over to paddle a stretch of the Kankakee River, where we may see some cranes and other migrants, then swing by the Jasper-Pulaski preserve for the sunset spectacle of as many as 15,000 cranes returning from their daily feeding grounds.
    • October & November, '08 - TBA
    • paddling starts at midday; crane viewing from an hour before sunset; (the hours vary a bit from day to day with the sunset)

    • We'll provide transportation for a $10 contribution to gas.
    • Bring binoculars if you have them! And a camera.
