SKYSCRAPER CANYON TRIP / (formerly the Pub Yaw*) - From a natural setting of herons hunting and turtles basking to one of the most unnatural river canyons in the world, this is an amazing trip.

  • This trip passes south through downtown, past the Sears Tower, River City and the Pagoda in the Park before landing at Lawrence's Fish on the edge of Chinatown, where you might try the smoked Lake Michigan chub. (dinner is not included in trip price.)
  • Here's a link to a nice article about the trip down as far as the forks.
  • This is a relatively long trip. Because of the seawalls and larger boats in the main stem of the river, we prefer that you be confident you won't tip over. So we don't recommend this trip for complete beginners. Paddle with us a time or two before heading downtown with us.
  • trips leave from the Chicago launch most Sunday evenings
    • July 20 & 27 (6:00 launch; take out around 9:30)
      • July 13 is sold out (6:00 launch)
    • August 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31 (6:00 launch; take out around 9:00)
    • Sept. 7, 14, 21 & 28 (5:30 launch; take out around 8:30)
    • October 5th & 18th (5:00 pm launch; take out around 8:00)
RESERVATIONS:

  • The Skyscraper Canyon trip is by reservation only: call 773 704-2663 or e-mail us - $50/paddler in a single kayak, $35/paddler in a canoe or tandem kayak.
    • To reserve, let us know what boat or boats you'd like (canoe, tandem kayak, single kayak) and a good phone number where we could reach you the afternoon of the trip in case we have to talk about the weather forecast.
    • We don't have a bus, so paddlers should make some provision for getting back to their cars or getting home. The landing is near the Red Line, or you could leave a car at the landing prior to the trip, so it's there waiting for you. (There is ample parking at Lawrence's). We'll provide suggestions and advice on this, and we won't leave anyone behind, but relying on us, you might have to wait while we circle back once or twice.

    * This trip was once the "Pub Yaw", using the nautical term for a deflection off course -- we liked the idea that paddling downtown was a little off your normal course; alas, we no longer finish at a pub. I hate to retire the name, but it has to be done.
